<image:title>Upcoming Events - WOMEN OF FAITH'S WEBINAR - NALA MOORTHY</image:title>
<image:caption>Talked about Hinduism. According to her, Hinduism offers a perspective as a possible solution for the spiritual void that exists in today’s society. She said that the contributions of the Hindu’s faith is the Samsara, a set of doctrines that says that our soul -or our consciousness- is the human’s part that doesn’t change and that is present in every mortal creature. Our goal is to liberate who we are inside. She talked about Karma that teaches us self responsibility, Dharma which guides us in the path of good conduct and morality, Yoga that helps the ones who practice it unify their mind with their body, Ahimsa teaches us how to be loving, caring and compassionate towards all living things. Nala also stated that by abiding these eternal laws we can bring harmony in our society.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Upcoming Events - WOMEN OF FAITH'S WEBINAR - CATHERINE BIAYA</image:title>
<image:caption>Talked about the dynamics on how to build bridges of trust and love between cultures, races and religions from her Christian perspective. According to her,in order to understand others and their culture, we can start by asking critical questions and by opening ourselves to them. Consequently, we are able to avoid having biases, prejudices, stereotypes, discrimination and racism. She recommended the use of the principles of mutual respect, mutual sharing, mutual responsibility and mutual recognition.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Upcoming Events - WOMEN OF FAITH'S WEBINAR - JEANINE MUSAU KABUYA</image:title>
<image:caption>Offered us her definition of a woman of faith. According to her, being a woman of faith is being a woman of word. Because a woman of word uses the power of persuasion and communication in order to build bridges. She can sacrifice herself by putting the community’s interests before hers and by serving others. A woman of faith is someone who has self-esteem, confidence and the sense of responsibility that would help her aim for change. She is an actress not a spectator. This faithful lady lives for the sake of others through her acts of service and sacrifice. She is hopeful in all circumstances. She prays, fast and puts in the work to achieve her goals because she believes that faith without action is dead.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Spoke about the necessity of Muslim’s Awareness Week and the project created by the Muslims community. She stated,“The aim [ of the project ] is to improve the understanding of Quebec Muslims in a deliberate approach aiming at achieving social cohesion, minimize if not prevent conflict, curtail violent acts, and sustain harmony in our society.” Salma resumed the project with four key factors to succeed: 1- Discussing the sources of misunderstanding towards Quebec Muslims. 2- Creating a prerequisite environment for addressing the root causes of conflict in our society. 3- Offering opportunities for rapprochement among various groups. 4- Developing effective educational tools about Muslims and advocacy for Muslims in Quebec.</image:caption>

My journey began with a simple and profound act of saying no. I grew up in a developing nation, shaped by the legacies of colonialism and systematic inequality that left a shadow on my identity. That realization was the beginning of my struggle to regain the authentic me, as a woman, to be treated with respect and to be valued for who I am.”</image:title>

      <image:title>Past Events - WOMEN OF FAITH’S WEBINAR - Jeanine Musau Kabuya</image:title>
<image:caption>The final panelist, Jeannine Musau Kabuya, offered us her definition of a woman of faith.

<image:title>Past Events - Grandparents’ Contribution to the Well-being and the stability of the Family</image:title>
<image:caption>On Monday, January 31st,2022, Global Women Peace Network-Canada held the 4th Webinar under the theme “Faith and Families”exploring family relationships in different cultures. The topic this time was “The Grandparents’ Contribution to the Well-being and the Stability of the family”. Our speakers were grand-parents from different faiths or cultural backgrounds. Twenty-five participated in the bilingual event which was facilitated by an interpretation team. Our first speaker, Denise Anne Boissoneau is a citizen of the Anishinaabe Nation – Ojibway. She studied Euro-Canadian laws and Indigenous legal traditions and worked with The Council of Elders and The Correctional Service of Canada. Denise Anne has a strong commitment to unity and global peace through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission national awareness conversations and has been leading several KAIROS Blanket Exercises as well as public and ecumenical-faith meetings. Her discourse revealed much about the thought and culture of her Indigenous heritage. Due to the history of residential schools followed by the “60’s scoop” the indigenous population were alienated from their families and culture. Today, the younger generation is encouraged to reconnect with their language and culture as a means to re-establish their sense of identity and belonging, reclaiming their heritage .</image:caption>

<image:title>Past Events - Grandparents’ Contribution to the Well-being and the stability of the Family - The next speaker, Alfredine Linda Plourde is French Acadian and proud of it. When she became aware of the many problematic attitudes in the child care system and family court that she felt called to become an activist to raise public attention to these little known facts. She founded “Protecting Canadian Children” in 2007, published two books reporting her findings and traveled extensively through Canada and the USA to meet other parents and victims. She has received multiple awards and recognition including the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers and continues her activities and campaign to bring needed changes to our society. She shared some of the many lessons learned along the way. First of all being that grandparents are the best listeners and mentors. They provide support and “a warm blanket of love’ when parents aren’t available. Studies show that the presence of grandparents in a child's life is a mental health booster and that grandparents who are involved with their grandchildren live longer. Grandparents can teach about family history and past fashions. She also pointed to a new phenomena; young people teaching their grandparents about new technologies, computers, tablets, etc…</image:title>

<image:title>Past Events - Grandparents’ Contribution to the Well-being and the stability of the Family - Marc and Isabelle Laurin are parents of 6 children, grandparents of 4 grandchildren with a 5th on the way. Blessed by Rev. Moon and his wife in 1982, they have dedicated themselves to the promotion of stable and harmonious families as a pillar for a stable and harmonious society and world, a world of peace. They have been involved in parents' committees, have always been committed citizens in their communities, and founded the organization Families on the Move. Today, they are particularly dedicated to the “On va s'aimer encore” (We will keep Loving each Other) committee whose objective is to promote and enhance the stability of our society by reaching elected officials and policy-makers to advocate for the need to prevent family breakdown and address the many social ills resulting from our current societal trends. They drew from their family experiences and conversations with their grandchildren, alternating between each others’ comments. Marc spoke on the realization one grandchild had, suddenly asking “grampa, who is your dad?”. Isabelle brought out the mutually beneficial aspect of the young parents having someone to rely on when they desperately need some relief and time to reconnect. She greatly enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and creating a special bond in doing so. She underscored the necessity to respect the parents’ rules and preferences, without fail! This last edition of the “Faith and Families” webinar series shone a light on a very critical ingredient for the success of our families and the betterment of our society, the intergenerational relation and all it has to teach us. One participant commented “it is magnificent, it was a touching and enriching encounter in spite of many technical difficulties”. Altogether a very valuable reminder that everyone is a unique contributor to building a better future. By Eveline Stewart</image:title>

<image:caption>The program then turned towards brainstorming for new projects that fit the mission of WFWP Canada. Led by WFWP Board Member Yulia Tarasova, the participants were divided into smaller discussion groups and came up with several creative ideas as they also planned out the necessary details to make their ideas a reality. One project idea, titled “Happy World Peace Cafe”, was to give support to low-income families by offering free lunchboxes in the Toronto area. These lunch boxes would be government-funded. In addition to this, we also discussed holding events that educate youth and families about the importance of the family, while offering an entertaining environment at the same time. In this, the values of the group would be shared among the people in the community. Overall, it was a successful weekend where about 20 women of all ages came together to empower each other and spread positive motivation, the end goal being to place family and community at the center of their hearts. The success of this retreat was in great part due to good planning and organization by Ms. Yulia Tarasova, for which we are all most grateful. We were able to get a better grasp of what WFWP Canada can become and how everyone can be more involved and most importantly, how to get more and more people connected.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Several more questions were asked and shared with the audience. There were some cute replies and all were followed by much laughter. Ms. Tadin also shared how important a mother is by quoting King Solomon from Proverbs 31 in the Bible, where the focus is on a woman having great virtues. She concluded her speech by saying that the mother has an important role in bearing children, raising them and guiding them as God's representatives with her feminine sense of affection and love that God has granted uniquely to women. God blessed each woman with this feminine nature. Since mothers have an important role in the bearing and nurturing of children, they also can enable their daughters to become such giving mothers. In the end, we all greatly benefit from this precious gift. The emcee then introduced our guest speaker, Ms. Atiya Hasan, a financial advisor, former president of Zonta Club in Toronto and a public speaker. Being a Muslim and celebrating the month of Ramadan didn't stop Ms. Hasan from coming to share her views at our Mother-Daughter seminar. Her presentation had two components, one from the scriptural perspective and the other one from the worldly point of view. She shared Biblical views on women and mothers from Eve, to Moses's mother, and to Mary, Jesus's mother. Ms. Hasan spoke more in-depth about Prophet Mohamed's first wife and the influence she had on his life. She stated that "Heaven lies under the feet of their mothers."</image:caption>

<image:caption>Aside from the scriptural views, Atiya also shared about her own mom, who influenced her to become the person she is today. She attributed this influence to the unconditional love and investment that her mother personally showed her. She taught her to be strong, yet loving and kind, to be perseverant, yet passionate and to maintain a strong faith and cultivate a great love for all humanity. In families of faith, she said, "we believe that mothers are the glue that keeps the family together". During the Q&A period, participants had the opportunity to ask various questions related to Muslim beliefs and culture, with regard to the importance of mothers and women in general. After a hearty and refreshing lunch, the emcee led us in a fun quiz between some of the mother and daughter pairs in attendance. The mother/daughter team that was able to give the most accurate answer about each other received a very nice prize. The program continued with several mothers sharing concerns about their personal relationships with their own daughters and they also shared some concerns and challenges on how to raise daughters with high standard and good values.</image:caption>

<image:caption>WHAT DOES A DAUGHTER MEAN TO A MOTHER? "A daughter is a copy of her mother and at the same time someone totally distinct and unique." - Simone de Beauvoir - The relationship between mothers and daughters is both pivotal and complex, changing throughout the course of both their lives. Realizing the need to continually nurture this valuable relationship, the WFWP Toronto chapter holds an annual event on the topic of the mother-daughter relationship. This year, on May 26th, 2019, the main theme was ‘Walking in my Mother's Shoes, Seeing through my Daughter's Eyes.’ The program began on a rainy Saturday morning with our wonderful emcee, Miss Jennifer Biscocho, who shared a few points on the importance of the mother-daughter bond. Lilly Tadin, the president of WFWP Canada, welcomed the guests by asking a series of questions: “When I mention the word ‘mother’, what do you think about? Why did God create mothers and how did God make them?”</image:caption>

<image:title>Past Events - HOW TO BUILD HAPPY FAMILIES</image:title>
<image:caption>Editor’s Note: We are very pleased to include this report from our sister organization in Canada and will continue to feature stories of their uplifting work in upcoming issues of the newsletter, so look forward to it! Women’s Federation for World Peace of Toronto held a Family Day Round Table Seminar on the theme: “Harmonious Families, The Greatest Facilitator of Happiness” on February 23, 2019 in Toronto with nearly 60 participants. The program featured four round table speakers, who each had their own perspective and nuggets of wisdom to share, as well as some inspiring entertainment from Japanese volunteers. Ms. Lilly Tadin, President of WFWP Canada, reminded us that a family is a microcosm of the world and that we should strive to expand family-type love to people of the world. She related her own difficulties adapting to her husband’s family and the wisdom of her father-in-law – or rather her father-in-love – who eventually won her heart. In particular, the presence of grandparents, aunts and uncles provides invaluable support to new parents. Above all, she recalled how she came to understand the power of the saying, “the family that prays together, stays together” and that putting God at the center of our family is key to building harmony. The following speaker Dr. Erum Siddiqui, Professor at George Brown College, Toronto, underlined the role of the family as the basic unit of society. She spoke of the influence of spousal unity on the children’s happiness. Through a brief historical overview, she explained how we evolved from a male dominated society and are moving toward equal partnership between spouses. Unfortunately, the prevalence of single mother families leaves children lacking parenting models. Next up was Jasmin Edwards from “United We Stand Breakthrough Ministries”, who spoke on how a biblical perspective can give us guidance on being a loving, united family. She stressed the importance of finding time to be together and develop constructive communication skills. Parents should always try to build up others through their words and show respect and interest. We should seek to imitate God and deny ourselves, putting others first.</image:caption>

<image:caption>HerStory Awardee Tahira Qamar’s reflection The event was very well organized by Lilly and her team. It was good to see so many people from all different walks of life join in. It was all very interactive so there was a lot of room for participation by the attendees. Our special thanks go to Angelika Selle and Katarina Connery who made the effort to come to Canada and gave us a deeper insight into the work and goals that WFWP is trying to achieve, goals that create peace and harmony between different faith groups and cultures. Such events give us hope that peace can be achieved through dialogue and implementation of ideas discussed in an action plan. Mrs. Angelika Selle’s reflections The first presentation was given by Katarina and myself as an intergenerational team, which in and of itself inspired everyone deeply. We felt that the audience responded to the heart and content of what we were presenting, and they liked the many educational and outreach materials we introduced from the USA, which were created also for others. During the Leadership of the Heart presentation, many participants had spiritual experiences, and a real transformation, since it is an interactive and experiential session. Dr. Moonshik Kim, regional Family Federation Director who attended the entire day was absolutely inspired. He said he never heard of that term, Leadership of the Heart, in any seminary, and he said it should be spread very wide! I mentioned to him that it was my inspiration from WFWP Founder Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon and her husband, Reverend Sun Myung Moon, and my own personal experience. A call to action given by WFWP Canada President Lilly Tadin challenged all present to step forward and either renew their membership with WFWP Canada or get involved now with the Canadian chapter in Toronto. On Sunday morning, our WFWP USA team was also invited to give a sermon, which was entitled: Peace Starts with Me - What's Next?. Since Katarina and I have had many opportunities to see and hear Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon speak and be in her presence, we shared about her vision of this new spiritual spring time and era we live in, and also her heart and desire to create an environment for peace everywhere. I also elaborated about what practical implications this time has for women, mothers, and sisters, which is mostly to step out of our comfort zone and become actively involved in our communities spreading a mother’s love. Katarina also spoke of her personal experience and views as a young woman and mother with Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, which was very enlightening and inspiring. We concluded with uplifting the Canada church community to create bonds of heart and collaboration as one North American continent. Again, the congregation was very moved and inspired. New beginnings between WFWP Canada and the USA WFWP USA looks forward to collaborate more from now on with WFWP Canada and their president, Lilly Tadin, who was truly delighted about our coming and sharing knowledge and inspiration about WFWP and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon with the Canadian WFWP chapter and guests.</image:caption>

Why & How?” • “Challenges of Policing in the 21st Century” • “Could an Interreligious Council at the UN oversee Jerusalem as an International City.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>The conference consisted of three panels comprised of a moderator and experts in each area. Not only were the issues addressed within a Canadian context, but also in the broader context of how Canada can serve the world in each of the above areas. In his welcoming remarks, Dr. Moonshik Kim, Chair of the Universal Peace Federation in Canada, emphasized that given current tensions in our world, issues raised by the conference theme are indeed urgent. Co-MCs for the conference were Robert Duffy and Eveline Stewart, both veterans of peace efforts on several continents. After introductions to the Universal Peace Federation by Franco Famularo and to the Women’s Federation for World Peace by Mrs. Lilly Tadin, a video presentation featured the world-wide efforts of both organizations. The first panel moderated by Dr. Peter Stockdale on “A Canadian Youth Peace Service. Why & How?” featured Ms. Lina Tuzet, currently a social worker, who has actively participated in service projects in Vanuatu and in Paraguay during the past three years. She was followed by Baraa Arar, a high school student, strongly engaged in youth activities in the Muslim community of Ottawa. Both impressed the audience with their articulate presentations. Andrew Cardozo of the Pearson Institute offered a view from a public policy perspective and the need for strengthening peace oriented youth activities. Desire Kilowla, program officer for International Development- Citizenship and Immigration Canada, provided the view as a Congolese living in Canada and his efforts to effect change in the Democratic Republic of Congo and beyond.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After a musical interlude provided by Classical Violinist, Ralitsa Tcholakova, the luncheon speech was given by veteran Ambassador for Peace, Rev. Darryl Gray, who currently serves as Special Assistant to the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), spoke about the vision of the founders of UPF and WFWP. He urged each one present to emerge from the shadows with their message of goodness. Rev. Gray shared that even though a lot has happened since Martin Luther King Jr. founded the SCLC in the United States, recent violence due to racial tensions in the USA demonstrates there is still a lot of work to do. The afternoon program included the appointment of four new Ambassadors for Peace, a final panel on the need for an Interreligious Council at the United Nations. Moderator Father Jacques Kabangu introduced the session which posed the hypothetical question: “Could an Interreligious Council oversee Jerusalem as an International City.” Ricardo de Sena, UPF North American Secretary General led the session with a presentation on a proposal for such a council at the UN as proposed by the late Rev. Moon in August, 2000. He was followed by international human rights consultant and educator, Dr. Karen Mock who approached the question from the viewpoint of one with a Jewish Heritage. She was followed by Mrs. Alexa Ward, deputy director of the UN Office of the Women’s Federation for World Peace. A Muslim view was provided by Ms. Shaheen Junaid Ashraf, a representative of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women. The concluding on this session were provided by Mr. Michael McIntyre, past president of the Capital Region Interfaith Council in Ottawa. Each of the three sessions was followed by a lively Question and Answer session. To conclude the conference, the Honourable Anita Vandenbeld, recently elected to the Federal Parliament of Canada, explained “How Women of the World Empowered her to Become a Member of Parliament.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>During the 2nd panel on the “Challenges of Policing in the 21st century” a contrast of speakers addressed the topic. The moderator, Dr. Michael Balcomb, a US citizen and President of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, USA shared an array of recent statistics on the state of affairs in the USA which, in his view, provided for a far worse situation with regards to relations between police and citizens than most countries – especially Canada. Retired Chief of Police for York Region, Armand La Barge, provided a glimpse into the history of policing in Canada and the world. Providing hard numbers on the state of police resources (both human and material) in Canada was an eye-opener for many of the participants. (see attached presentation) La Barge was followed by Ms. Gabrielle Fayant, an Indigineous Activist, who shared about the pain and suffering in her community due to continuing tension and misunderstanding with police and folks in authority. Daniel Stringer then added his comments as one involved in community building as chair of the National Capital Peace Council in Ottawa. He was followed by Dr. Vern Redekop, a specialist in conflict studies at St. Paul University and author of “From Violence to Blessing” who related how he emerged from a small Mennonite Community in Saskatchewan to facing domestic and global policing issues.</image:caption>

On behalf of the attendees, we applaud the WFWP/UPF for choosing such timely topics that have an influence on all of our lives. The well-informed speakers (please request a copy of the program) who delivered much ‘food for thought’, sparked a dialogue that should be a beginning rather than a conclusion to such a meaningful event.</image:caption>
